Materials needed:
  • Sturdy cardboard (upcycled shipping boxes work great!)
  • Thinner cardboard (from a cereal box)
  • Scissors
  • A photo of your little one holding a message to Dad
  • Craft paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Glue stick
  • Parental supervision ;)

Ok, let's jump into it!...

First, paint your frame a solid color (we used white to make the shapes pop!)

Then, let your little one(s) paint their favorite color on the thinner cardboard. No need to be neat here. Let that creativity fly (just not on the walls).

Trace around the photo you'd like to frame. A polaroid would be cute! Just be sure to write your message in nice bold lettering so that it's visible in the photo.

Peel away a thin layer inside the marked square, just deep enough to place your photo inside the frame. Leave some cardboard to use as a backing for your photo to be glued.

Once dry, draw out some fun botanical or abstract shapes on the decorated cardboard.

Then, carefully cut them out!

Let those little fingers go to work glueing on the cut out decorative pieces around the outside of the frame.

When you're all finished decorating, cut out a rectangular piece of sturdy cardboard and glue it to the back to create a stand for your frame. Hot glue might be best to make sure it stays on and doesn't tip over!

Tada! You're all set. Dad's going to love it. The only thing left to do is keep an exciting secret to surprise him on his big day!
